Monk Put on Sex Offence Register A Monk Has Been Put on the Sex Offenders' Register after Being Found Guilty of Indecently Assaulting a Woman at Aberdeen University BBC News [Scotland] January 17, 2006 http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/4619446.stm The offences took place over a period of almost two years at the establishment's Chaplaincy Centre.
However the university's Catholic Society has claimed Father Mark Paterson, 47, is the victim of a miscarriage of justice. The priest's defence agent said any physical contact had been "playful". Despite hearing an argument that there was no sexual motive, Sheriff Kenneth Stewart disagreed and found Paterson guilty at Aberdeen Sheriff Court. Background reports Paterson's victim, who had helped out around the chaplaincy with ironing, cleaning and other tasks, was described in court as "vulnerable". Sentence on the monk has been postponed for six weeks for background reports. In a statement, the University Catholic Society said it believed a serious miscarriage of justice had occurred. It claimed that no members of the society were allowed to give evidence in the monk's defence. |
